Colin Gonsalves has been chosen for a prestigious rights award in Sweden
- He is a senior Indian advocate and will be honoured for his innovative use of public interest litigation in securing fundamental human rights for India’s most marginalised and vulnerable citizens.
- He will share the award and the prize money worth over USD 300,000 (SEK 3 million) with two other laureates — Khadija Ismayilova from Azerbaijan and Robert Bilott from the US
- The three laureates were chosen from 102 nominations from 51 countries.
About Right Livelihood Award
- It is widely known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’.
- It is an international award to "honour and support those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today."
- The prize was established in 1980 by German-Swedish philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull
