- The couple was awarded for the exceptional contribution to the field of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment
- Salim is a CAPRISA Professor for Global Health in the Department of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.
- He serves as the Director of the Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban
- The couple is involved in the development of innovative ways of preventing HIV in women.
- Both of them are professors of epidemiology at Columbia University in New York
- They received the award from the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) in Baltimore in the US.
- The award was presented to them by Robert Gallo, who discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS, at the 19th international meeting of the IHV.
