South Asia's first 'Ro-Ro' ferry service begins in Gujarat

  • This is South Asia's first world-class Ro-Ro ferry service.
  • It is the first phase of the Rs 615 crore project.
  • The Ghogha-Dahej RoRo service will change the distance between two destinations.
  • It will shorten the 360 kms distance between Ghogha in Bhavnagar district to Dahej in Bharuch district to just 32 kms by water.
  • The travel time will be minimised to 1 hour after which was 7-8 hours earlier.
  • On January 25, 2012, Mr. Narendra Modi, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time, laid the foundation stone for a service which would prove revolutionary in the coming days.
  • The first phase of the service is meant for passengers.
  • In the second phase, the boats will be able to carry cars.
  • In the final phase, it would also have the facility to carry trucks.
