National Education Day of India is celebrated on 11 November every year since 2008
- It marks the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who was the first education minister of independent India.
- He served as Education Minister from 15 August 1947 until 2 February 1958.
- The Ministry of Human Resource Development decided to commemorate November 11 as National Education Day every year, from 2008 onwards.
- National Education Day aims at strengthening our educational institutions and to raise the quality of education to greater heights. I
- Maulana Azad's laid the foundations of the education system in an independent India as well as to evaluate our current performance in this field.
About Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
- Beings an academician and a freedom fighter, he was given the responsibility to be the first Education Minister for free India.
- He gave thrust to Adult Education and Literacy and emphasised on elementary education but also propagated diversification of secondary education and vocational training.
- He set up of The Central Institute of Education, Delhi which later became the Department of Education of Delhi University.
- The setting up of Indian Institute of Technology in 1951, the University Grants Commission in 1953 are all credited to his vision.
