Shubhangi Swaroop Becomes First Female Pilot in Indian Navy

The first batch of female officers passed out from the Indian Naval Academy

  • The Indian Navy inducted its first-ever woman pilot.
  • Of the 328 cadets including 20 female cadets who passed out included Shubhangi Swaroop, a native of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, who has become the first woman pilot in the Navy.
  • The female officers, who were from the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and two overseas cadets (from Tanzania and Maldives), have been appointed in the Naval Armament Inspection (NAI) branch.
  • Four women cadets marched out in the Passing Out Parade reviewed by Admiral Sunil Lanba at the Indian Naval Academy (INA) in Kannur
  • Punita Arora was the first woman in India to achieve the second highest rank i.e. Lieutenant General of Indian Armed Forces and she was the first female Vice admiral of Indian Navy.
  • Punita was commissioned in January 1968
  • Priya Jhingan was the first woman to join the Indian Army as an officer
  • She was cadet number 001 at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai
