  • The aircraft, codenamed ‘Kunlong’and designed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), has a wingspan of 38.8 metres.
  • Four turboprop engines are its power-source and it is capable of carrying 50 people.
  • Kunlong can stay in the air for 12 hours. 
  • Earlier this year, China launched its first domestically built aircraft carrier, the Type 001A. 

Usage

The amphibious aircraft has military applications but will be used for firefighting and marine rescue, with at least 17 orders placed so far with state-owned manufacturer Aviation Industry Corp of China

  • It is one of China's three "big plane projects" approved by the State Council of China, along with the Xi'an Y-20 and C919
  • The AG600’s flight capabilities put all of China’s island-building projects in the South China Sea well within range.
  • With an operation range of 4,500-km, it can land and take off from water which will prove useful for China's artificial islands
  • It  can fly to the southernmost edge of China’s territorial claims, the James Shoal, in just four hours from the southern city of Sanya
