The central cabinet approved the draft National Medical Commission Bill, 2017, which seeks to replace the existing apex medical education regulator Medical Council of India (MCI) with a new body for ensuring transparency.
The four autonomous boards entrusted with conducting undergraduate and postgraduate education constituted by the bill assessed and accredited by medical institutions and registration of practitioners under the National Medical Commission, a senior government functionary said.
Background
From a very long time, the medical council of India has been criticized the medical education in India for its unethical practices, corruptions and lack of accountability. The recommendation comes from Ranjit Roy Chaudhury committee and parliamentary standing committee. The main aim to replace the medical council act, 1956.Implementation
The N.M.C. or national medical commission constituted by the bill with its 25 members to regulate medical education in India. The establishment of N.M.C. will reduce the hazards in the medical education system to start new courses. A common entrance exam will be designed for all medical graduates and postgraduates to bring all under the same education system. It also planned to bring new investments in this sector to make it newer and stronger.Medical Council of India
