India re-elected to International Maritime Organisation Council

India has been re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation.


  • India is selected under Category B  that represents nations with the largest interests in international sea borne trade.
  • India secured the second-highest number of votes (144) from member-countries, just after Germany's 146 and ahead of Australia's 143.
  • Indian High Commissioner to the UK YK Sinha represented India at the assembly
  • India has been one of the earliest members of the IMO, having ratified its convention and joined it as a member-state in the year 1959.
  • India has been elected to the Council of the IMO ever since it started functioning

What is Maritime Organisation Council?


  • IMO is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping. 
  • It was established in Geneva in 1948 and came into force ten years later, meeting for the first time in 1959. 
  • It is headquartered in London, United Kingdom
  • IMO has 172 Member States and three Associate Members.
