NGT Bans Plastic Items in Towns Located Along Ganga

On December 15, 2017 the National Green Tribunal or known as NGT imposed ban on use, sale, purchase and storage of plastic items such as carry bags, plates and spoons in towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh till upper areas of Uttarkashi along the Ganga River in Uttarakhand.

Reason behind taken the action:

The move was taken to tackle, prevent, and further stop the pollution of our auspicious and holy river the Ganga. The green tribunal panel order comes under the hearing plea of environmentalist MC Mehta.

The further consequences

In its hearing, N.G.T. imposed a fine of Rs.5000/- on those who violating the norms and rules and proper action also will be taken against it.

The national green tribunal was established in 2010 under N.G.T. Act, 2010 for the protection of effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to the environment. New Delhi is the office of N.G.T. Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai are other regional office of the Tribunal.
