World Soil Day: 5 December 2017

Published on December 06, 2017
Soil can be considered as one of the most important elements required for human survival as no plant can grow with soil and thus the production of vegetables, grains and fruits is unimaginable without soil.

  • No scientific invention can ever replace soil.
  • Keeping in view the importance of soil for human existence, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002 made a resolution which proposed to celebrate 5th of December be World Soil Day.
  • This day highlights the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human well-being.
  • In the present era, we have been ignoring our natural resources and soil is one of them.
  • Soil depletion is one of the major issues faced in modern times because people are unaware of the preventive measure to stop soil erosion.
  • 2017 Theme: ‘Caring for the Planet starts from the Ground’

Measures to Protect Soil

  • Protect forests from commercial activities.
  • Planting more trees
  • Rotation of Crops
  • Building dams to prevent floods
