On the occasion of India’s 69th Republic, Day on 26th January 2018, the president of India approved the gallantry awards to the Indian Army.
- He approved 390 gallantry awards and other defence decorations for the Indian Army personnel.
- The awards include one Ashok Chakra, one Kirti Chakra and 14 Shaurya Chakras and 28 Param Vishisht Seva Medals to the Indian Army personnel.
List of the awards and the awardees
Ashok Chakra
- Ashok Chakra has been awarded posthumously to Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala, a Garud commando of the Indian Air Force who died fighting terrorists in Bandipora of Jammu and Kashmir in November.
- This is the third Ashok Chakra for the IAF and its first for ground combat.
- Corporal Nirala was a part of a Garud Special Forces Unit of the IAF and attached to a Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu and Kashmir for CI duties.
- Disregarding personal safety and displaying indomitable courage, Corporal Nirala retaliated with effective lethal fire and gunned down two categories ‘A’ terrorists and injured two others. He was hit and later on died of injuries.
Kirti Chakra
- Kirti Chakra has been awarded to Major Vijayant Bisht of the Army who led an ambush in Chorgali forest of Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri district. He killed two terrorists and saved the life of another soldier during an ambush.
Shauyra Chakra
Shaurya Chakra has been awarded to the following-
