8th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, from 9-12 April 2018.

8th Regional 3R Forum inaugurated

  • The forum provides a strategic platform for sharing best practices in 3R areas, including new and emerging issues of concern in waste management. 
  • The Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific was launched in 2009 in Tokyo, Japan with the objective of integrating the 3Rs in policy, planning and development. 

Aim

The aim is to shift the global consumption and production patterns towards building a sound-material-cycle society, recognizing the importance of reducing barriers to the international flow of goods and materials for recycling and re-manufacturing, particularly in developing countries.

Background

  • The United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) has been organizing International Regional Forum on 3Rs since 2009 with the support of Government of Japan to promote the concept of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in industry, service and agriculture sector.
  • The overall objective is to establish sound material-cycle society by adopting resource conservation, techniques and technologies.
  • The Regional 3R Forum in Asia was successfully launched at the inaugural meeting held on 11-12 November 2009 in Tokyo, Japan by UNCRD with support from the Government of Japan.
  • Since then, this Regional 3R Forum has been organized in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Maldives and Australia with the support from respective governments, Government of Japan, and UNCRD

Key facts

  • The Theme of the Forum was – “"Achieving Clean Water, Clean Land and Clean Air through 3R and Resource Efficiency- A 21st Century Vision for Asia-Pacific Communities".
  • The Forum was co-organized by-
    •    the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
    •    the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan.
    •    United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD).
  • The event saw participation of around 40 mayors of cities around the world and mayors of more than 100 cities across India.
  • Government of Madhya Pradesh, Indore Municipal Corporation and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) were Organizing State Partner, City Partner and Industry Partner of the event.
  • The Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific was launched in 2009 in Tokyo, Japan with the objective of integrating the 3Rs in policy, planning and development. 
  • The forum members include governments, aid agencies, international agencies, private sector entities, research bodies, NGOs and other relevant parties.
  • During the forum meetings, members hold discussions on policies, provided support for the implementation of 3R projects in member countries and share useful information and build networks for further promotion of 3R initiatives.
  • The overall goal of the forum is to achieve low carbon and sound material cycle societies in Asia through facilitating bilateral and multilateral cooperation for increasing resource and energy efficiency through the 3Rs.

About UNCRD

  • UNCRD (United Nations Centre for Regional Development) was established in 1971 based on an agreement between the Government of Japan and the United Nations. Its operations are supported by UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA). It aims to achieve sustainable living environment for all. Its mission is to assist developing countries to achieve sustainable development.
