Former Secretary of DoPT, Bhanu Pratap Sharma was appointed as the Chairman of Banks Board Bureau (BBB).
- He will hold the office as the Chairman of BBB for a period of two years.
- He will succeed the former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai who was appointed as the Chairman of BBB for a two year term. His two year term ended in March 2018.
- The other members of the BBB are: Vedika Bhandarkar (former MD Credit Suisse India), P Pradeep Kumar (former MD SBI) and Pradip P Shah (founder MD Crisil).
About Bhanu Pratap Sharma
- Mr. Sharma is a retired IAS officer, Bihar cadre, 1981 batch and a former Principal Secretary (Finance) in the Bihar government.
- He is presently chairman of the recruitment and assessment centre at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- He had been health secretary and secretary for personnel and training at the Centre, before retiring in June 2017 from the civil service.
Banks Board Bureau
- Banks Board Bureau (BBB) is an autonomous body of the Government of India for the PSBs (Public Sector Banks).
- It was announced by the Union government in August 2015 as part of seven point Indradhanush Mission to revamp the PSBs.
- The Modi government has approved the setting up of BBB in February 2016 and BBB started functioning from April 2016.
- It replaced the Appointments Board of Government.
- It is housed in RBI’s central office in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- The BBB engages with the Public Sector Banks (PSBs) to help build capacity to attract, retain and nurture both talent and technology.
- It aims to help prepare PSBs to take on the competition, have the ability to appropriately manage and price risk across business cycles, develop resilience to generate internal capital etc.
