DefExpo 2018 : India & Russia sign 7 MoUs

Indian companies and Russian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) signed 7 MoUs at the DefExpo 2018 held in Thiruvidanthai, Chennai.

  • Earlier, at the third India-Russia Military-Industrial Conference, discussions were made on improvement of after-sales support of Russian origin defence platforms used by Indian defence forces.
  • The ministry of defence had identified 48 items covering all major platforms which can be made in India with Russian collaboration. 
  • The MoUs were signed during third India-Russia Military-Industrial Conference held on the sidelines of DefExpo 2018. 

7 MoUs signed were-

  • Larsen & Toubro Ltd and joint stock company Rosoboronexper: for underwater platforms of Indian Navy and Heavy Weight Torpedo and future-ready combat vehicles.
  • Ananth Technologies and JSC Concern Radio-Electronic Technologies (KRE): for product support for defence systems and upgrade of optoelectric sighting and navigation complex for Su-30MKI aircraft).
  • Ananth Technologies and Research and Production Corporation: to set up technical and logistic support in India for T90 S&T72 tanks in service with the Indian Army.
  • Space Era and KRET: to set up technical and logistics support in India.
  • OSKROSOMARINE and Russian company JSC AGAT: for post-sale support for Fregat radar installed onboard naval frontline warships.
  • Krasnet Defence Technologies and JSC Concern AGAT: for co-operation in the field of after-sales support of equipment manufactured by JSC AGAT and installed on board Indian ships.
  • Aviatech Enterprises and JSC AGAT: for co-operation in after-sales support of equipment manufactured by JSCAGAT and installed on board Indian naval ships.

About the Defence Expo 2018

  • The Defence Expo, formally inaugurated by Narendra Modi was held from 11-14th April 2018 in Chennai.
  • It was an elaborate ceremony to ‘hand over’ key technologies by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to the industry.
  • Defence Expo event witnessed the transfer of eight technologies to the private and public sector by defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman. 
  • It aims to project India as a defence manufacturing hub that is gearing up to even export products.
  • Some of the technologies showcased and transferred during the conclave were – 
    • Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF)
    • Sonar Dome
    • Heavyweight Torpedo Varunastra
    • ASTRA Missile
    • HUMSA – UG Sonar & ABHAY Sonar
