The first Informal Summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China’s President Xi Jinping was held in Wuhan.

  • The main objective of the meeting was to exchange views on overarching issues of bilateral and global importance, and to elaborate their respective visions and priorities for national development in the context of the current and future international situation.

Key Facts

  • The two sides aim to enhance policy coordination in their neighbourhood to discuss cooperation in the form of China India plus one or China India plus X.
  • Both leaders agreed that simultaneous emergence of India and China as two large economies and major powers with strategic and decisional autonomy has implications of regional and global significance.
  • They shared the view that peaceful, stable and balanced relations between India and China will be a positive factor for stability amidst current global uncertainties.
  • Therefore a bilateral relationship will be conducive for the development and prosperity of the region.
  • They decided to strengthen the Closer Development Partnership in a mutually beneficial and sustainable manner to bring greater prosperity for their peoples.
  • They also agreed to issue strategic guidance to their forces and strengthen existing mechanisms to maintain peace and tranquillity along the border areas.
  • They highlighted importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in all areas of India-China border region in larger interest of the overall development of bilateral relations.
  • Prime Minister Modi and President Xi agreed that both sides have the maturity and wisdom to handle the differences through peaceful discussion, respecting each other's sensitivities, concerns and aspirations.
  • They agreed on their need to strengthen strategic communication through greater consultation on all matters of common interest. This would have a positive influence on enhancing mutual understanding and will contribute to regional and global stability.
  • They recognized the common threat posed by terrorism and committed themselves to cooperate on counter-terrorism.
  • They laid emphasis on the fact that a good Sino-India relationship is important for maintaining peace and stability in world.
  • PM Modi laid emphasis on importance of people-to-people (P2P) contact through STRENGTH.
