PM Narendra Modi chairs 6th meeting of NDMA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the sixth meeting of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) at New Delhi.

• In this meeting, he reviewed activities of NDMA to effectively manage and respond to disasters affecting country.
• He also reviewed ongoing projects undertaken by NDMA.
• During this meeting, he emphasized on need for better coordination between various stakeholders and undertake more joint exercises to bring about effective response to save life and property.
• He also stressed upon the need to bring in global expertise in the field of disaster management.

About National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA):

• It is a statutory body under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
• It was established in 2009 and its provisions are envisaged in Disaster Management Act, 2005.
• Its mandate is to coordinate the response to natural or man-made disasters and capacity-building in case of disaster resiliency and crisis response.
• It is also responsible for framing policies, laying down guidelines and best-practices and coordinating with State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs) to ensure a holistic and distributed approach to disaster management.
• It is governed by a 9 member board chaired by Prime Minister of India (thus, he is ex-officio chairman of NDMA).
