Indian Navy completes refit of Maldivian Coast Guard Ship Huravee

Indian Navy has successfully completed the refit of Maldivian Coast Guard Ship (MCGS) Huravee at the Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam and was formally handed over.

  • The ship was refitted in four-months as part of Indian Navy's initiative undertaken in furtherance of its diplomatic outreach to friendly foreign navies in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Details:

  • During the refit, major repairs were undertaken on MCGS Huravee's hull, main propulsion and auxiliaries.
  • In addition a number of equipment and systems of the ship were upgraded for better performance and reliability.
  • Moreover, all equipment were put through extensive harbour and sea trials so as to achieve full combat capability of the ship and ensure its continuous availability for operations to Maldives Coast Guard for the next operational cycle.

About MCGS Huravee:

  • It was originally commissioned as INS Tillanchang, a Trinkat class patrol vessel built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata in March 2001. 
  • It was subsequently gifted to Maldives by Government of India in April 2006 to strengthen strategic partnership between two nations and work together to ensure maritime safety of the IOR.
  • The Indian Government through Indian Navy has undertaken such diplomatic courtesies previously when it undertook refit of a ship in 2015.
