BCCI has appointed W V Raman as the Indian Women's Cricket Team coach. South African cricketer Gary Kirsten was initially contacted for this position.

  • Gary Kirsten, who is associated with IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, did not agree to give up his job with RCB which made the selectors chose WV Raman as the coach of the Indian women cricket team.

About W V Raman:

  • W V Raman Raman has played 11 Tests and 27 ODIs for India and is one of the most qualified coaches in the nation.
  • He has coached Ranji Trophy sides like Tamil Nadu and Bengal and the Indian Under -19 cricket team as well.
  • He was the first Indian to hit a century in South Africa during the 1992-93 tour.
  • Presently, Raman is serving as a batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

About the selection:

  • Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy were the members of the selection committee of the coach for Indian Women Cricket Team.
  • Total 28 candidates had applied for the position.
  • Former coach Ramesh Powar, whose tenure ended last month amid many controversies, had also appeared for the interview for this position.
