President Ram Nath Kovind unveiled life size portrait of Atal Bihari Vajpayee

President Ram Nath Kovind has unveiled the life size portrait of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the Central Hall of Parliament.

About former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee:

• Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.
• He passed away on August 16, 2018.
• He was a member of the Indian Parliament for over four decades.
• He was one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh.
• He became the first President of the BJP in 1980.
• He served as the Minister of External Affairs in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Morarji Desai from 26 March 1977 to 28 July 1979.

He served three terms as the Prime Minister of India:

1. The First term was for a period of 13 days in 1996
2. The Second term was for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999
3. The Third one was a full term from 1999 to 2004

• He was the first non-Indian National Congress leader to serve a full-term as the Indian Prime Minister.
• Under his tenure, India had conducted the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998.
• The Kargil War was also fought during his tenure.
• He was awarded the Bharat Ratna Award by then Indian President Pranab Mukherjee in 2015.
• His birthday is observed as the Good Governance Day.
• He is also known for his poetry.
• PM Modi had released a commemorative coin in memory of Mr. Vajpayee on December 24, 2018 on the occasion of his 94th Birthday.
