Current context: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) will celebrate the 159th Income Tax Day i.e. Aaykar Diwas on 24th July 2019.

- Income Tax was first introduced on 24th July 1860 in India by Sir James Wilson.
- It was to compensate for the losses incurred by the British regime during the first war of independence i.e. Revolt of 1857 against British Rule.
- From that day 24th July is observed as the Income Tax Day every year.
- The week preceding the Aaykar Diwas 2019 has been marked by various activities like organising a grievance redressal week to help redress pending grievances of the taxpayers, Digital kiosk having digital display was also set up in certain stations to improve taxpayer services.
- The department will also launch a “Kardaata e-Sahyog Abhiyaan” which will assist and support taxpayers in enabling them to e-file their returns and discharge other tax-related obligations.
- The event will include the release of the e-journal, departmental publications, and publicity kit for outreach programmes.
