  • Kumar hoisted India's tricolour on Mount Denali in Alaska, USA.
  • Mount Denali is the highest peak of North America standing at 20,310 ft.
  • She scaled the summit in her third attempt.

About Aparna Kumar:

  • Aparna Kumar is an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Dehra Dun Frontier DIG.
  • She is a 2002 batch Uttar Pradesh (UP) Cadre IPS officer.
  • She has been posted at Northern Frontier Headquarters of ITBP in Dehradun.
  • She also became 1st woman IPS DIG and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officer to successfully complete the South Pole expedition.
  • She is also the first woman IPS officer to reach the South Pole on January 13th after walking 111 kilometres with 35 kilograms of equipment on her back.
  • In 2016, she became the first officer of the All India Services to successfully scale Antarctica's highest peak Mount Vinson Massif followed by Mount Manaslu in Nepal in 2017.

  • Mount Denali is considered the third most prominent and third most isolated peak on Earth, after Mount Everest and Aconcagua.

What is the 'Seven Summits Challenge'?

  • It is the name given to challenge of the climbing highest point in each of the 7 continents.
  • 1st such challenge was completed in 1985 when Dick Bass, Texas oil tycoon reached the summit of Mt Everest.
  • Currently, over 300 people have completed the 'Seven Summits Challenge'.
  • The Seven Summits include:
    • Carstensz Pyramid- Height: 4884m; Location: Oceania (Australia - New Guinea)
    • Kilimanjaro- Height: 5892m; Location: Africa
    • Elbrus- Height: 5,642m Location: Russia
    • Aconcagua- Height: 6962m; Location: South America
    • Denali (or Mt McKinley)- Height: 6194m; Location: North America
    • Vinson Massif- Height- 4892m; Location: Antarctica
    • Mt. Everest- Height- 8848m; Location: Asia
