About Chandrayaan-2:

  • Launch date: July 15,2019
  • Launch vehicle: GSLV-Mk III
  • Launch Location: Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh
  • Chandrayaan-2 is the second lunar mission of ISRO after Chandrayaan-1 launched on 22nd October 2008
  • The mission consists of 3 modules- Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) and Rover (Pragyan)
  • The Lander is named Vikram after the name of the father of the Indian space programme, Vikram Sarabhai and the Rover named Pragyan meaning wisdom to understand moon’s lunar surface
  • The Lander and the Rover will be placed near the lunar south pole which has never been explored by any country yet
  • Till date, only Russia, the U.S. and China have soft-landed on the moon
  • Chandayaan-2 is an indigenously developed mission and with its success, India will become the 4th country in the world to successfully land on the Moon
