In News: Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and UN World Food Programme in India has commemorated five decades of partnership towards addressing food and nutritional security in India
MoAFW Commemorates Partnership with UN WFP
  • The Coffee Table Book-50 years of Partnership for Change was launched at the event to mark the achievements so far attained
  • The book contains India’s journey towards food and nutrition security with giving light on the Green Revolution, digitization of food safety nets and the White Revolution
  • Both of them aims for ‘ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture’ to achieve the target of Sustainable Development Goal 2

UN World Food Programme:

  • WFP is the United Nations food assistance branch and is the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and food security
  • WFP’s work for emergency assistance, relief and rehabilitation and focus more towards conflict-affected countries

India and WFP:

  • With 4 out of 10 children in India stunted, India shares a quarter of the global hunger burden (25%)
  • WFP is working toward Zero Hunger Challenge (ZHC) that aims to achieve zero hunger by 2030
  • The WFP in partnership with the Government of Odisha is implementing a two-year project in Gajapati District to improve nutrition through rice fortification in schools through the mid-day meal scheme
  • WFP provides advice and technical support to the Government of India to improve subsidised food delivery through the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS)
