Current context: Minister of State for Defence, Shripad Naik signed MOUs with Myanmar’s Commander-in-Chief of Defence forces, Min Aung Hlaing.
MoU signed between India and Myanmar
  • The defence cooperation agreement was made on strengthening maritime security through joint surveillance, reviewing joint exercises and training provided to Myanmar Defence Services in India and developing new infrastructure.
  • Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Of Myanmar, was currently on an official visit to India from 25 July to 2 August 2019.
  • India has steadily increased defence co-operation with Myanmar in recent years as it is a key pillar of India’s Act East Policy towards prioritising relations with its East Asian neighbours.
  • India and Myanmar have co-operated closely on matters of security in the past. Both the armies have joined each other on several occasions to root out anti-India insurgent groups.
  • Indian and Myanmar armies busted camps of insurgent groups in Myanmar by carrying out two phases of 'Operation Sunrise' this year.
  • Myanmar’s Capital is Naypyitaw.
  • The currency of Myanmar is Burmese kyat.
