Zero-Balance Bank Accounts under PMJDY crossed balance of Rs 1 trillion

Current context: The zero-balance bank accounts opened under the PM Jan Dhan Yojana scheme, has crossed the cumulative account balance of Rs 1 trillion on 3rd July 2019
PM Jan Dhan Yojana
  • The balance and the number of accounts had a sudden surge after demonetisation
  • Six out of 10 accounts are in the rural areas
  • Three-fourth accounts are in public sector banks and just 3.4% are in private sector banks

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY):

  • PMJDY was launched on 28th August 2014
  • It was launched as a National Financial inclusion scheme to promote financial inclusion, increase banking penetration and to provide at least one bank account per household across the country
  • It allowed opening bank accounts with zero balance, Rs 1 lakh accidental insurance cover and an additional Rs. 30,000/- life insurance cover, providing RuPay debit card etc.
