Current context: Sri Lanka government has approved to issue an on-arrival visa to Indian tourists.
Sri Lanka gave Free Visa-on-Arrival to India
  • The step has been taken by the SL government to revive the tourism sector after the incident of Easter bombing.
  • Sri Lanka has facilitated 39 countries for the visa-on-arrival and visa-free programme with effect from 1st August 2019.
  • India was not included in the first 39 countries choose for the relaxation.
  • The SL government extended the number of countries to 49 adding 10 more countries including India on 24th July 2019.
  • Easter bombing took place on 21st April 2019 in Sri Lanka in which 3 churches and luxury hotels in the capital Colombo were bombed by suicide bombers.
