- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has proposed to amend the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 to address the concerns raised at certain global platforms
- Certain state governments have also proposed the amendment has they were facing difficulties in finding suitable candidates for the posts of chairman of state commissions
- The provisions of the amended act are:
- Allows a judge of the SC to be eligible to be appointed as chairman of the commission
- Increase the number of members from 2 to 3, one shall be a woman
- Chairman of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, National Commission for Backward Classes and Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities are included as deemed Members of the Commission
- Reduce the term of chairman and members of the commission from presently 5 to 4 years
- CJI and judge of the High court would be eligible to be the chairman of the state commission
- States will confer human rights functions of UTs except for Delhi
