1st US-ASEAN maritime drills

Current context: The first ASEAN-US Maritime Exercise (AUMX) is being jointly held between the United States and ASEAN Countries in the South China Sea.
1st US-ASEAN maritime drills 
  • The Sattahip Naval Base is starting from Thailand and will end in Singapore, and will last for 5 days.
  • The exercises will stretch into “international waters in Southeast Asia, including the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea” in its whole journey.
  • The Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) nations will undergo exercise activities such as boarding of target vessels to simulate search and seizure, drilling etc.
  • The drill has been conducted after a Chinese survey vessel had extended its activities to an area closer to Vietnam’s coastline.
  • China and some ASEAN countries lie at the border of the South China Sea and the area of contention lie mainly in the “Nine-dash line”.
