- He is the chairman of the North Eastern Council (NEC) and the meeting constituted the Governors, the Chief Ministers and officials of eight north-eastern States.
- In the meeting, he has assured that the Government would never touch Article 371 of the constitution, which grants special provisions to the northeast region.
- Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma proposed the 8-laning of Guwahati- Shillong- Dawki-Sylhet-Chittagong Highway.
- Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal suggested the council to start hosting a festival in each country of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to promote the northeastern states of India as "hub of opportunities".
- The North Eastern Council is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the region which consists of Sikkim, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram and, Nagaland.
