Current context: Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully tested the air-to-air missile Astra on 16th September 2019.

  • The missile was launched from a Sukhoi Su-30 MKI combat aircraft, off the coast of Odisha.
  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed the missile.
  • This is the first indigenously built beyond visual range air-to-air missile of the Indian Air Force.
  • The mission profile was executed in a textbook manner and the missile was tracked by Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS), Various Radars and Sensors.
  • ASTRA has a range of over 70 km and can fly with a speed of over 5,555 kilometres per hour.
