Current context: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned INS Khanderi in Mumbai on 28th September 2019.
INS Khanderi Commissioned into Indian Navy 
  • INS Khanderi is an indigenously built Kalvari class diesel-electric submarine.
  • INS Khanderi is built under the ‘Make in India’ initiative at state-run Mazgaon Dock Limited and was under sea-trials for over two and a half years.
  • The key features of INS Khanderi include negligible noise under water due to a state-of-the-art stealth technology, its maximum requirement is 36 crew unlike previous requirement of 60 crew, capacity to stay for long during under water operations.
  • The submarine is a reincarnated version of the first Khanderi submarine which was commissioned into the Indian Navy in December 1968.
  • The first version of the submarine INS Khanderi was decommissioned after 20 years of service in October 1989.
  • The submarine is built under the project 75, which is being carried out at Mazagon Docks Ltd in collaboration with the French submarine builder Naval Group (formerly DCNS).
  • The 1st out of the 6 Scorpene-class submarines built was the INS Kalvari, was commissioned in December, 2017.
  • INS Khanderi is the 2nd in the 6 Scorpene-class submarines.
  • 3rd Scorpene-class submarine, the INS ‘Karanj’ was launched at MDL on January 31, 2018 and is currently under sea trials phase.
  • 4th Scorpene-class submarine, the INS Vela was launched in May 2019 and is under sea trials. 
  • The 5th and 6th submarines namely INS Vagir and INS Vagsheer respectively are in various stages of outfitting.
