Current context: Actor Amitabh Bachchan was presented the Dadasaheb Phalke award 2018 by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhawan on 29th Dec 19.

  • The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke who is revered as the “father of Indian cinema”.
  • Dhundiraj Govind Phalke was an Indian filmmaker and directed India's first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra (1913).
  • The award was instituted in 1969 and is considered to be the highest honour for an artiste in Indian cinema.
  • It is presented annually by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
  • It is given to an individual for "outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema".
  • The award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of 10 lakh rupees.
  • Amitabh Bachhan made his debut in Hindi film industry in 1969 with "Saat Hindustani".
