- The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 9th Dec 19 and the Rajya Sabha approved it on 10th Dec 19.
- The Bill seeks to amend the Arms Act, 1959.
- It contains the provision to:
- Decrease the number of licensed arms allowed per person.
- Increase the quantum of penalties for violations of the law to prison time between 10 years to life imprisonment. Illegal manufacturing, sale, conversion, repair, import/export would attract 7 years to life imprisonment.
- Increases the duration of the validity of arms license from 3 years to 5 years.
- Issue arms license in its electronic form to prevent forgery.
- The bill seeks to improve the regulation in transportation, trafficking, import, export, manufacturing etc. of illegal arms and its smuggling for the safety of the people.
- The new Bill allows only two guns for the license holders.
- The Bill has a provision to keep hereditary weapons for exhibition purpose after the deactivation and surrendering of licenses.
