Current context: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the implementation of the Atal Bhujal Yojana (ATAL JAL) on 24th Dec 19.
Atal Bhujal Yojana 
  • The Atal Bhujal Yojana (ATAL JAL) is a Central Sector Scheme with a total outlay of Rs.6000 crore.
  • The scheme will be implemented over a period of 5 years (2020-21 to 2024-25).
  • It is a pioneering initiative of the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti.
  • The scheme aims to improve groundwater management through community participation in identified priority areas in seven states.
  • The identified priority areas in seven States include Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat and Karnataka.
  • The scheme will provide benefit to nearly 8350 Gram Panchayats in 78 districts in these States.
  • 50% of the total outlay of Rs. 6000 crore, shall be in the form of World Bank loan, and be repaid by the Central Govt and the remaining 50% shall be provided through Central Assistance from regular budgetary support.
