National Broadband Mission

Current context: Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Communication and Electronics & Information Technology, has launched the National Broadband Mission (NBM) on 17th Dec 19.
National Broadband Mission 
  • The NBM is a part of the National Digital Communications Policy, 2018.
  • The mission will secure universal broadband access for the implementation of broadband initiatives.
  • Ravi Shankar Prasad also launched the Logo of the NBM on the occasion.
  • The vision of the NBM is to provide:
    1. Fast track growth of digital communications infrastructure
    2. Bridge the digital divide
    3. Facilitate digital empowerment and inclusion
    4. Provide affordable and universal access to broadband for all
  • The target set under the NBM includes:
    1. Broadband access to all villages by 2022
    2. Laying of incremental 30 lakhs km route of Optical Fiber Cable by 2024
    3. Develop a Broadband Readiness Index (BRI) to measure the availability of digital communications infrastructure
    4. Investment of $ 100 billion (Rs 7 Lakh Crore) from stakeholders including Rs 70,000 crore from Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF)
