Current context: India test-fired its indigenously developed surface-to-surface nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile off Odisha coast on 3rd Dec 19.
Prithvi-II Missile 
  • The user trial of the Prithvi-II missile was conducted from a mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur.
  • The missile weighs about 4,600 kg and is capable of carrying 500 to 1000 kilograms of warheads.
  • The target range of the missile is 350 km and is thrust by liquid propulsion twin engines.
  • Prithvi-II is the first missile that has been developed by the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.
  • The trail was conducted to reconfirms the Army’s readiness to fire it at short notice.
  • The missile is developed by the joint collaboration of DRDO and Bharat Dynamics Limited.
