UNFCCC COP25

Current context: The 25th session of Conference of Parties under the UN Framework Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC COP25) began in Madrid, Spain.

• The Conference will take place from 2nd to 13th December 2019.
• Chile was the original host of UNFCCC COP25 and it cancelled the original hosting agreement for COP 25 on 30th October 2019.
• The conference incorporates the:

1. 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
2. The 15th meeting of the parties for the Kyoto Protocol (CMP15).
3. The 2nd meeting of the parties for the Paris Agreement (CMA2).

• The Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Prakash Javadekar delivered India’s Statement at the UNFCCC COP 25 that include:

1. India has reduced the emissions intensity of GDP by 21 %.
2. India is on track to achieve the goal of 35% emissions reduction as per the Paris Agreement.
3. India has already achieved 83 Giga Watts of the 175 Giga Watts targets for renewables under Paris Agreement.
4. India has put a carbon tax on coal production at the rate of Dollars 6 per tonne.
5. India leapfrogged from Bharat Standard IV to Bharat Standard VI for vehicle emission norms and from 1st April 2020.
6. India has promised the creation of additional carbon sinks of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon equivalent through increasing green cover.
7. India will be investing about 50 million Dollars in water conservation.
