Current context: The World AIDS Day is observed on 1st December every year across the world.

  • The day is observed to raise public awareness about Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS.
  • AIDS is a pandemic disease caused due to the infection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
  • This year, the theme is "Communities Make the Difference."
  • The central government has launched the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) for prevention and control of AIDS.
  • The three-pronged strategy of prevention, testing and treatment are followed in NACP response to HIV.
  • A seven-year National Strategic Plan from 2017 to 2024 has also been developed by the government to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
