Current context: Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is celebrated on 9th January every year in India.
16th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 
  • The day is observed to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of India.
  • The day also commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India on 9 January 1915.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs established the event in 2003 and is celebrated every year.
  • External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will interact with Indian Diaspora across the globe through a Digital Video conference on the day.
  • Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, received the report of the L.M. Singhvi committee on 8 Jan 2002, and announced the "Pravasi Bharatiya Divas" (PBD) on 9 January 2002.
