- The IEA report highlights the achievements of India’s energy policies and provides measures to achieve well-functioning energy markets.
- This is the first review of IEA, carried out for India.
- India has been an IEA association country since March 2017.
- The Highlights of IEA’s India 2020 Energy Policy review are:
- It suggested the government to adopt a long-term energy plan for the country with a focus on rationalising the energy prices, focusing on infrastructure needs, affordable energy and move towards cleaner fuels.
- The IEA report praised the draft National Energy Policy by NITI Aayog and said to adopt and implement across central and state governments.
- India spent $25 billion in 2018 on subsidies for the consumption of fossil fuels, mostly supporting oil consumption in the form of LPG ($17 billion) and gas ($4 billion).
- Oil subsidy accounted for $3.5 billion in 2018-19, a continuous decrease from the level of $14 billion in 2012-13 and $11billion in 2014-15.
- Energy research, development and deployment (RD&D) can be a strong enabler of India’s energy policy goals.
- It said to improve the collection, consistency, transparency and availability of energy data across the energy system at central and state government levels.
