- The National Girl Child Day was first initiated in the year 2008, by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
- The objective is to highlight the inequalities faced by girls, promote awareness on topics including rights of a girl child, importance of education, health, and nutrition.
- On this Day, awareness campaigns and programs related to subjects like saving the girl child, child sex ratios, and creating a healthy and safe environment for a girl child are organised.
- Madhya Pradesh government is celebrating the day on the theme of “Aware girl child-able Madhya Pradesh" (Jagruk Balika-Samarth Madhya Pradesh) under the "Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao" scheme.
- Women and Child Development Department will also celebrate National Girl Child Week from 24th to 30th January 2020.
- The programs will also include "Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao" signature campaign, plantation and nameplate drive in the names of daughters, mass oaths for girl child protection etc.
- In 2019, it was celebrated with the theme of ‘Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow’.
