Current context: President Ram Nath Kovind launched the Pulse Polio Programme for the year 2020 at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 18th January 2020.
Pulse Polio Programme for 2020 
  • The President launched the programme on the eve of the National Immunization Day which is observed on 19th January 2020.
  • Under the programme, polio drops would be administered to over 17 crore children of less than five years of age across the country.
  • Polio booths have been set up across all states which will remain open from 9 am to 4 pm on 19th January 2020.
  • The programme is a part of the immunization drive of the Central Government to sustain polio eradication from the country.
  • Pulse Polio is an immunisation campaign which was established by the government of India to eliminate poliomyelitis or infantile paralysis caused by the poliovirus.
  • The disease leads to muscle weakness and inability to move among people and spreads easily from person to person.
  • The Pulse Polio was started in 1988 globally following World Health Assembly resolution in 1988.
  • Pulse Polio Immunization programme was launched in India in 1995.
  • Vellore, (Tamil Nadu) became the first Indian town to become 100% polio-free and the strategy was adopted in the rest of India in 1995.
  • India was declared as polio-free on 27th March 2014.
