1st India-Africa Defence Ministers Conclave

Current context: The First-ever India-Africa Defence Ministers Conclave (IADMC) was held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh on 6th Feb 2020, on the sidelines of DefExpo-2020.
1st India-Africa Defence Ministers Conclave 
  • The conclave was co-organised by the Ministry of Defence and was the first in the series of Pan Africa events at the Ministerial level.
  • The conclave emphasised India’s readiness to take the defence engagements with the friendly African countries to the next level.
  • A Joint Declaration - "Lucknow Declaration”, was adopted after the conclusion of IADMC 2020.
  • The focus was specifically on the defence cooperation, in the areas of:
    1. Strengthening cooperation and mutual capabilities in combating terrorism and extremism
    2. Keeping the cyberspace safe and secure
    3. Supporting the UN in advancing and keeping the peace
  • India geared up to provide defence services, equipment and other measures to the African counterpart including:
    1. Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs)
    2. Fast Interceptor Boats, body and vehicle armour
    3. Night Vision Goggles (NVGs)
    4. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
    5. Dornier aircraft and arms and ammunition
  • Both the nations share a common interest in the Maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, which is highlighted by the Government’s emphasis on SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Region).
