Current Context: Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), which is an institute of National Importance of the Department of Science and Technology, has signed an agreement with Wipro 3D to design and manufacture automated ventilators.
- The aim behind this manufacturing is to meet the medical needs which are arising due to COVID-19.
- The automated ventilators is based on the Artificial Manual Breathing unit (AMBU), which is also called as Bag-Valve-Mask (BVM). This AMBU or BVM is developed by SCTIMST institute which is based in Kerala.
- AMBU: It is basically a handheld portable device that is used to provide positive pressure ventilation to the patient with a controlled rate of expiration, inspiration and tidal volume, etc., who is getting difficulty in breathing. AMBU ventilator which is with the inputs from the clinical faculties will be assisting the breathing of critical patients who are unable to get access to ICU ventilators due to the increase in the number of COVID-19 patients..
- In order to enhance rapid production, the automated ventilators are designed with the readily available components so that this alternative solution will reach the needy ones in their requirement of time thereby enabling a safer and effective lung-protective operation to COVID patients.
