Current Context: RBI launched the 49th round of quarterly OBICUS (Order books, inventories, and capacity utilization survey) of the manufacturing sector which includes the reference period January-March 2020.
- The OBICUS includes the data regarding the quantitative values of new orders received during January to March 2020, data of the orders which are backlog, pending orders, inventories which defined the break-up between the work which is under progress and the finished goods inventories and the data regarding item wise production.
- In this OBICUS a total of 704 manufacturing companies were considered to manipulate the data.
- It showed a decline in capacity utilization (CU) to 68.6% in the third quarter of 2019-20 from 69.1% in Q2. Also, orders received in Q3: 2019-20 were lower compared with the previous quarter.
- Static Part: What is OBICUS? Since 2008, RBI’s OBICUS is taken quarterly (4 times a year) and companies of the manufacturing sector are asked to volunteer information on their inventory level. It provides a deep scenario regarding the demands of the Indian manufacturing sector.
