Current Context: Russia will be launching its first satellite to monitor the Arctic climate and environment l this year.

  • Arktika-M is the name of the satellite.
  • Arktika-M remote-sensing and emergency communications satellites will gather meteorological data in the polar regions of the Earth, which will allow improving weather forecasts and will enable scientists to better study climate change.
  • The Arktika M is a series of planned remote-sensing and emergency communications satellites which will be operated in a highly elliptical 12-hour orbit. These are being designed to monitor high-latitude areas of the Earth. Their payload will comprise MSU-GSM multi-spectral imager and transmitters for meteorological and rescue systems.
