Coir Board signs MoU with IIT-Madras –To setup CoE to Boost use of Coir Applications

Current Context: Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Coir Board and IIT Madras for setting up a centre of Excellence(CoE) to boost the use of Coir applications (exclusively or in combination with other natural fibres).

  • The announcement of signing MoU was made by the Ministry of MSME.
  • Coir Board will be also providing Rs 5 crores in financial assistance initially for two years for setting up and operating the Centre of Excellence. IIT Madras will provide technical guidance and support to the development of relevant technology. CoE will assist in generating the Intellectual Property Rights and technology transfer.
  • Under the MoU, Coir Geo-Textiles (CGT) can be successfully used to prevent soil erosion in slopes/embankments, river embankments, mine slope dumps stabilization, etc. CGT can be used in the low volume rural roads as a re-enforcement material.
  • CGT is permeable natural fibres made from Coconut husk and is used in road construction, for checking soil erosion, riverbank protection etc.
