Current Context: A state of the art flood warning system called ‘I-FLOWS’ is launched in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- It is launched by Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Science and Technology, Earth Science Dr, Harsh Vardhan Rathore along with CM of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray.
- ‘I-FLOWS’ is a state of the art Integrated Flood Warning System.
- It is launched with an aim to alleviate and monitor the flood activities by providing early warning in the city during high rainfall and cyclone conditions.
- It is developed by India Meteorological Department (IMD), Indian Institute of Tropical Metrology (IITM) and Ministry of Earth Science.
- The ‘I-FLOWS’ flood warning system provides estimates of flood situation up to 3 days in advance and also provides 3 hours to 6 hours nowcast describing immediate weather updates and in low lying areas forecasts upto12 hours in advance.
- It is incorporated with 7 modules namely, Data assimilation module, flood module, inundation module, vulnerability module, risk module, dissemination module and decision support system module.
