Current Context: Ministry of Railways has decided to set up solar power in Bina, Madhya Pradesh in order to directly power the Railway Overhead line.

  • This move is proven to be first time in the world that such a unique power plant has been installed. Because for the first time in the world, the power generated by solar power plant will be directly fed to overhead power lines of the national transporter which will provide power to the traction system of the electric locomotives to run the trains.
  • The project of 1.7 Megawatt solar power plant is setup by Indian Railways. The project is setup in partnership with Bharat Heave Electrical Limited (BHEL) on railway land. The solar power plant project is set up at Bina Traction Sub Station.
  • With the help of this initiative, the solar power plant will produce around 25 lakhs unit of energy annually and will save about Rs 1.37 crore for Indian Railways every year.
