National Rhino Conservation Strategy

Current Context: On the occasion of World Rhino Day which is observed on 22nd Sep, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar launched National Rhino Conservation Strategy.
National Rhino Conservation Strategy
  • It is launched for Indian one-horned rhinoceros. 
  • The conservation initiatives which are undertaken for rhino till now has led to enrich grassland management which has ultimately helped to reduce negative impacts of climate change through carbon sequestration.
  • The National Rhino Conservation Strategy will work to conserve rhino species under 5 objectives namely, protection, expanding the distribution range , research, monitoring and adequate and sustained funding.
  • Static Part: In India, the population of rhino is high in West Bengal, Assam and Uttar Pradesh. Also, Rhinoceros is the only large mammal species in all over Asia, which is down-listed from endangered to vulnerable in the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
